From there, every piece is individually hand sanded, stained, highlighted, sealed, assembled, wired, and finished in Utah by Smithereens owner and artist, Skyler.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"isSelectedEnd\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe dark hand-applied stain settles differently across the peaks, depressions, crater walls, and smaller surface details, revealing the depth of the carving while allowing subtle traces of the natural wood to show through. Because the finishing is done individually, no two Lunar Atlas pieces will look exactly alike.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"isSelectedEnd\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eDuring the day, the carving stands on its own as a substantial wall sculpture. Light from the room moves across the raised lunar terrain, creating changing highlights and shadows and revealing details that are easily lost in a flat representation of the moon.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"isSelectedEnd\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhen the optional integrated lighting is turned on, Lunar Atlas takes on an entirely different character.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"isSelectedEnd\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe optional concealed lighting casts an adjustable halo around the moon, visually separating the sculpture from the wall and creating a floating effect.
