FAQ
Why are your pieces priced higher than mass-produced decor?
Smithereens pieces are handmade, one at a time, with close attention to craftsmanship, materials, finish, and overall design. Many take dozens of hours to complete. You are purchasing a completely unique piece made with care, not something mass produced or factory made. You will have the only one in existence.
Are your pieces really handmade?
Yes. Every Smithereens piece is made by hand in Utah. Each one goes through a hands-on process that can include selecting the wood, preparing and treating the material, shaping, sanding, finishing, integrating lighting, testing, and final quality inspection.
Are your pieces one of a kind?
In most cases, yes. Because the wood itself is unique, no two pieces are exactly alike. Many Smithereens pieces are true one-offs and will not be replicated exactly.
Will sold pieces ever be restocked?
Some sold pieces may inspire future work in a similar style, form, or size, but no two pieces will ever be exactly the same. While certain types of pieces may return, each one will still have its own character and natural variation.
Where do you get your wood?
Most of the wood is gathered in Utah, often from riverbanks, lake shores, and floodplain areas. Each piece is selected for its shape, character, and potential, but gathering is always done thoughtfully and with respect for the land. There is an effort to leave each area better than it was found, whether that means being careful about what is taken, picking up litter, or treating the place with care.
What kind of wood do you use?
Smithereens often works with driftwood, but the brand is not limited to driftwood alone. In Utah, driftwood pieces may come from species commonly found around rivers, streams, and other riparian areas, such as cottonwood, pine, willow, or boxelder. If the exact wood type is known, it may be included in the product description. If it cannot be confirmed with confidence, it may be left unspecified.
Are the wood piece cleaned and treated before use?
Yes. Natural wood is carefully selected, cleaned, prepared, and treated as needed before becoming part of a finished piece. The cleaning, carving, sanding, and finishing process helps remove debris and prepare the wood for indoor use. Pieces are also treated and finished to help ensure they are clean, stable, and ready for use in the home.
Do you offer custom orders?
At this time Smithereens is not currently accepting custom orders. That may change in the future, so signing up for the newsletter is the best way to hear about future custom order openings and other shop updates.
Do you offer local pickup?
Yes. Free local pickup is available in or near Utah County, Utah.
How long does shipping take?
Most in-stock items ship within 3 business days, and all orders are typically shipped within 10 business days unless otherwise noted in the product listing.
Where do you ship?
At this time, Smithereens ships only within the United States.
How much does shipping cost?
Most items will ship for a flat $25 shipping fee. Some larger or oversized pieces may include an additional $50 oversized shipping fee. Any oversized shipping cost will be clearly noted in the product listing. Shipments to Alaska or Hawaii are also subject to an additional $50 shipping fee. (Sorry, it's extremely expensive shipping large items long distances)
Which carrier do you typically use?
Orders typically ship through UPS or Fedex.
Are shipments insured?
Yes. Orders are shipped with insurance and are carefully packaged to help reduce the risk of damage in transit.
What should I do if my item arrives damaged?
Please email help@smithereensco.com as soon as possible and include photos of the item, the packaging, and the shipping box so the issue can be reviewed and resolved.
Do you accept returns?
Returns are handled on a case-by-case basis. If you have a question about a return or an issue with your order, please reach out at help@smithereensco.com
What kind of lighting do your pieces use?
Many Smithereens pieces use LED lighting, especially LED strip lighting. Most lamp-style pieces use standard E26 sockets and can accommodate different bulb types, including smart bulbs, unless otherwise noted in the listing.
Are light bulbs included?
Yes, unless otherwise stated in the product listing.
What kind of bulb is recommended?
For many pieces, a soft light color bulb is recommended to complement the natural warmth and mood of the design. Specific recommendations may vary depending on the piece.
Are lampshades included?
Unless otherwise specified, yes, the lampshade shown in the product images is generally included. In many cases, the lampshade may ship in a separate box to help reduce shipping costs and better protect the item during transit.
Can I request a different lampshade?
If you have a preference about lampshade color or style, you can add a note at checkout or reach out before purchasing. These requests are handled on a case-by-case basis.
Do your wall-mounted pieces include hanging hardware?
Some hanging hardware will generally be included when applicable. However, depending on the piece and how you want it oriented, final mounting hardware may need to be attached by the customer. This is because some pieces can be displayed in different directions or configurations, and leaving that final placement open allows for more flexibility. The product description will provide more specific details about what is included, what is not included, and any installation recommendations for that piece.
Should I install wall-mounted pieces myself?
Professional installation is always recommended, especially for heavier pieces or anytime hardware needs to be mounted into a wall. Smithereens strongly encourages customers to use appropriate care and consult a professional when needed to ensure safe and secure installation.
Will the piece I receive look exactly like the photos?
If the listing is for a one-of-a-kind piece, you will receive the exact item shown. Because wood is a natural material, part of the character of each piece comes from its unique tone, grain, texture, and form.
How can I stay updated on new pieces or future custom order openings?
The best way is to sign up for the newsletter (See bottom of page). That is where Smithereens will share updates on new releases, shop updates, and any future changes to custom order availability.
