Lunar Atlas

Lunar Atlas

A topographically accurate representation of the lunar surface, carved into solid wood, individually hand finished, and illuminated from behind.

Lunar Atlas transforms the familiar face of the moon into a dimensional work of carved wood art. Its surface is a topographically accurate representation of the lunar landscape, bringing its craters, basins, ridges, and dramatic changes in elevation out of a flat image and into physical relief.

Each Lunar Atlas begins with 1.5-inch-thick solid wood and is precision carved to create the deeply textured lunar surface. From there, every piece is individually hand sanded, stained, highlighted, sealed, assembled, wired, and finished in Utah by Smithereens owner and artist, Skyler.

The dark hand-applied stain settles differently across the peaks, depressions, crater walls, and smaller surface details, revealing the depth of the carving while allowing subtle traces of the natural wood to show through. Because the finishing is done individually, no two Lunar Atlas pieces will look exactly alike.

During the day, the carving stands on its own as a substantial wall sculpture. Light from the room moves across the raised lunar terrain, creating changing highlights and shadows and revealing details that are easily lost in a flat representation of the moon.

When the optional integrated lighting is turned on, Lunar Atlas takes on an entirely different character.

The optional concealed lighting casts an adjustable halo around the moon, visually separating the sculpture from the wall and creating a floating effect. Choose warm ambient tones, cool lunar colors, vibrant combinations, or something more subtle depending on the room and atmosphere.

Color and brightness can be adjusted through the Govee app for convenient voice control.

The lighting was designed to complement the carving rather than define it. Turn it off and Lunar Atlas remains a detailed dimensional wood sculpture. Turn it on and the surrounding wall becomes part of the piece.

Made to order and individually numbered - Limited Run

Lunar Atlas is made to order rather than pulled from finished inventory. After an order is placed, each piece is individually carved, sanded, stained, finished, assembled, wired, and prepared for display before being signed and assigned its sequential number.

Current production time is approximately 5 to 7 business days before shipment. Because each piece is produced and finished individually, production times may occasionally increase during periods of higher demand.

Each completed Lunar Atlas is signed and sequentially numbered beginning with No. 001.

Natural differences in wood grain, stain color, carved texture, and hand-applied finishing mean every Lunar Atlas will have its own individual character.

About This Piece

Lunar form by day. Illuminated terrain by night.

Lunar Atlas was designed to make the surface of the moon feel physical rather than flat.

With the lighting turned off, the 28-inch circular relief reveals a topographically accurate representation of the lunar surface through deeply carved craters, ridges, basins, and smaller changes in elevation. The dark hand-applied finish settles differently across the raised and recessed terrain, while lighter highlights catch along crater edges and higher areas of the carving. As the surrounding light changes throughout the day, those contours create shifting shadows and bring different details of the lunar landscape forward.

When illuminated, Lunar Atlas takes on a second identity. Concealed color-adjustable lighting spreads behind the circular profile and reflects against the wall, visually separating the moon from its surroundings and creating a floating halo. Warm tones can soften the piece and add ambient light to the room, while cool whites, blues, purples, and more expressive colors can give the lunar surface an entirely different atmosphere.

The underlying lunar relief began as a digital carving model based on the moon's topography. Smithereens transforms that model into each finished physical artwork through solid wood preparation, CNC carving, extensive sanding, staining, hand-applied highlighting, sealing, lighting installation, mounting, assembly, wiring, and final detailing.

Each Lunar Atlas is carved from 1.5-inch-thick solid pine and individually finished by Smithereens owner and artist, Skyler. Variations in the wood grain, carved surface, stain absorption, and hand-applied finishing give every completed piece its own subtle character.

At 28 inches in diameter, Lunar Atlas is large enough to function as a focal point without requiring the wall space of an oversized rectangular artwork. Its circular form works especially well above fireplaces, consoles, beds, desks, and other spaces where a strong centered composition creates balance.

Each completed Lunar Atlas is signed and sequentially numbered. No fixed edition size has been established, allowing the series to remain naturally limited by the time required to carve, finish, assemble, and complete each individual piece.

This is not simply an image of the moon transferred onto wood. Lunar Atlas turns the moon's actual terrain into a dimensional physical surface, then uses light to extend the artwork beyond the edge of the carving and into the room around it.

Note on natural wood movement

Solid wood naturally responds to changes in temperature and humidity. As the surrounding environment changes throughout the year, the wood may expand, contract, or develop slight variations in flatness.

Lunar Atlas is supported by a rear mounting structure that also creates the floating space needed for the concealed lighting effect. Normal seasonal wood movement cannot be eliminated entirely, and slight changes in curvature or surface flatness may occur over time.

For the most stable long-term display, keep the artwork indoors in a reasonably temperature-controlled environment. Avoid prolonged exposure to excessive humidity, extremely dry conditions, direct heat, intense sunlight, or heating and air-conditioning vents.

If displaying above a fireplace, the wall and artwork should remain within normal indoor temperatures and should not be exposed to excessive direct heat.

Minor seasonal movement should not materially affect the artwork's carved detail, lighting function, or overall appearance.

You can keep the lighting warm and subtle for everyday ambiance, coordinate it with the colors of a room, or use a more dramatic color effect when entertaining. Brightness can be lowered to create a gentle evening glow or increased when you want the illuminated silhouette to become a stronger part of the room.

The artwork does not need to remain illuminated. This piece was designed to stand on its own as dimensional wood artwork during the day, with the lighting adding an entirely different presence after dark.

Smart controls require the customer to complete the applicable Govee account, app, Wi-Fi, and third-party smart-home setup. Available commands and features may vary between the Govee Home app and connected voice-assistant platforms.

How Long Will the Lighting Last?

The installed Govee Strip Light uses LED lamp beads rated by Govee for up to 30,000 or more operating hours.

To put that into perspective, 30,000 hours would equal approximately:

  • 20 years when used 4 hours per day
  • 10 years when used 8 hours per day
  • Nearly 7 years when used 12 hours per day

These examples are estimates based on the manufacturer’s rated operating hours. Actual longevity can vary based on brightness, daily use, operating temperature, ventilation, power conditions, and the lifespan of the controller and power supply. Using the lighting at a moderate brightness rather than continuously at full output may help reduce heat and support longer-term performance.

The lighting system is also designed to be serviceable rather than treated as a permanent, irreplaceable part of the artwork. The strip is secured behind the artwork with removable mounting clips, allowing it to be accessed, adjusted, removed, or replaced without altering the carved face of the piece.

If the lighting eventually dims, stops working, or becomes outdated, it can be replaced with the same Govee model, if still available, or with another compatible lighting system. This also gives the owner the option to upgrade the artwork with newer lighting technology in the future.

The lighting should only be operated indoors and should not be exposed to moisture, excessive heat, or restricted ventilation.

How Does it Hang?

Your artwork arrives with a French cleat mounting system already installed on the back of the artwork. To hang the piece, secure the included wall-side cleat in the desired location, confirm that it is level, and carefully lower the artwork onto the cleat until it is fully seated.

The French cleat distributes the artwork’s weight across a wider area, helps keep the piece level, and allows it to sit securely and evenly against the wall.

Included mounting hardware:
Wall-side French cleat, level, mounting screws, and drywall anchors.

Recommended installation tools:
Pencil, measuring tape, stud finder, screwdriver or drill.

Because of the artwork’s size and weight, installation by at least two adults is strongly recommended. The wall cleat should be secured directly into wall studs whenever possible. When studs are not available, use fasteners that are specifically rated for your wall material and for more than the artwork’s total installed weight.

The included drywall anchors may not be appropriate for every wall type. Plaster, masonry, concrete, metal studs, tile, and other specialty surfaces may require different hardware. The purchaser or installer is responsible for confirming that the mounting method and fasteners are suitable for the specific wall and installation location.

Detailed hanging instructions are included with the artwork. If you are uncertain about the wall construction, hardware requirements, or your ability to safely install the piece, please hire a qualified handyman, contractor, or professional art installer.

Is there a Power Cord, & Can it be Hidden?

Yes. This piece uses a standard plug-in power cord to provide reliable, full-strength illumination. A battery-operated system powerful enough to create the same level of ambient backlighting would require frequent charging or battery replacement and would not provide the same consistent performance.

The included cord is relatively slim and can simply hang down to a nearby outlet. In most rooms, it remains visually unobtrusive and does not significantly distract from the artwork. For a cleaner, more concealed installation, several options are available.

Outlet positioned behind the artwork

A standard or recessed outlet may be positioned behind the artwork so the cord and power connection remain hidden within the open area of the rear spacer frame.

The usable interior space within the spacer is approximately 37 inches wide by 10 inches tall. Before installing or relocating an outlet, carefully measure the artwork’s intended position and confirm that the outlet will fall inside this open area. The outlet, plug, adapter, and excess cord must fit within the available space without being pinched between the artwork and the wall.

A recessed outlet provides the lowest-profile appearance and creates additional space for the plug and adapter. Any new outlet or electrical modification should be completed by a qualified electrician and must comply with applicable local electrical codes.

Paintable cord cover

A low-profile cable raceway can be used to guide the cord from the artwork to a nearby outlet. Paintable raceways can be matched to the wall color, helping the cord blend into the room without requiring electrical work.

Routing behind furniture or architectural features

Depending on the placement of the artwork, the cord may also be routed behind a mantel, console table, cabinet, plant, or another architectural feature.

Important installation notes

Do not pinch, sharply bend, staple, puncture, or place mounting hardware through the power cord. Never run a standard plug-in cord or power adapter inside the wall. Only use electrical components and installation methods specifically approved for in-wall use.

Plan the artwork placement, outlet location, and cord route before installing the wall cleat. When electrical work or outlet relocation is needed, use a qualified electrician.
